Charles Gilbert Kapsner "Il Pittore"
“Remember nature is your teacher, I am your guide,” was a prevailing theme in the studio of Nerina Simi (1890–1987), where Charles Kapsner’s greatest learning occurred. Under Simi’s watchful eye he learned precise drawing, keen observation, and the accurate rendering of light, shadow, and form. His artistic roots are planted in the 15th Century, yet he remains a contemporary painter whose compositions fuse old and new.
Kapsner is an ARC Associate Living Master, and a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America, International Guild of Realism, and Allied Artists of America.
Alongside his gallery work, Kapsner is known for major public history projects, including principal artist on several frescoes in his home state of Minnesota. He painted the Veterans Education Historic Monument—a permanent installation of five 8’x10’ oil canvases at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery—and recently completed a portrait commission of General John W. Vessey, Jr. for the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum. His civic contributions have earned him the U.S. Coast Guard Public Service Commendation and the Minnesota National Guard’s Superior Volunteer Service Medal.
A versatile studio painter, Kapsner’s portfolio includes portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and florals. His current body of work includes new paintings inspired by his 2025 travels to Egypt.
Charles and his wife, Catherine, make their home in the woods along the Mississippi River in Minnesota. Follow his latest projects and gallery updates at charleskapsner.com.
Kapsner continually expands beyond the familiar, and focuses on this philosophy:
“The imagery I create--through portraiture, still lifes, florals, drawings, public art and more-- encourages the viewing audience to explore beyond their own immediate surroundings and invites them—through self-reflection—to more fully appreciate the beauty of the adornments of daily life while pondering the possibilities that lie ahead.”
